If you've read some of my blogs, you know by now that I like to recommend videos, books, and independent practice. In this blog, I've included the three branches of government activities for Florida Government and the U.S. Government.
Even though the fourth-grade curriculum is specifically geared towards Florida, relating it to the federal government provides background knowledge and gives students something to compare it to.
Videos about the Three Branches of Government
The Florida League of Cities has created a 10-minute cartoon that is ideal for students. This video covers various topics such as city charters, forms of government, municipal services, property taxes, and Home Rule.
This video is about the Three Branches of Government.
Books about the Three Branches of Government
The first book is about Florida's Government. It could serve as a good read aloud.

Three Branches of Government Activities
Integrate the Florida state government into your ELA and Social Studies blocks! Support your social studies curriculum with these vocabulary cards, posters, nonfiction text, graphic organizers, and comprehension worksheets.
Informational Text
Have students read informational text to research and learn about the structure and functions of the Florida state government. They can read the provided information to gain a better understanding of how government works, including the setup of the federal government, state and local government, the branches of government, key officials, and their roles.
Students should understand the federal and local governments to better understand Florida's state government.
One of the reasons I like printables better than a textbook is because I like my students to be able to engage with the text. I like them to be able to underline, highlight, and organize their comprehension.
Vocabulary Sorts
With these vocabulary cards, your students can match the word and definition or sort the cards into different categories. They can sort them by branches of government, people, federal, state, and local governments.
Hands-on Activities
Students can compare and contrast the state and federal governments.
Students can create posters to sort information into the branches of government.
